Kings Troubles
- Many kings became ruthless and increasingly power hungry
- Prince John began taxing the church in England
- The Church decided they would then leave the country entirely.
- Now the people feared they would be sent to Hell
THE MAGNA CARTA
- The Magna Carta is a letter the Nobles wrote to King John
- After the church left the Nobles threatened to abandon King John too
- They wrote a list of their demands called: The Magna Carta
- Either you cooperate with them, or they leave and take the soldiers with them.
- It had laws, declaring of taxes and telling of peoples rights that they have in the kingdom
- They had to agree on certain things
- King John had to follow the law. “I, King John, accept that I have to rule according to the law. So I agree:
1. Not to inprison nobles without trial
2. To have fair taxtaion for the nobles
3. To let nobles travel wherever they like
4. Not to interfere in Church matters
5. Not to take crops without paying for them”
And many more!!!
After signing the document, John ignored it. He signs it and kills everyone who signed it as well. Still, this set the stage for many of our rights and freedoms found in the constitution.
While the rest of this is happening, the rest of the world is under-going….
The Crusades.
